This course will allow attendees to develop their negotiation skills in a hands on scenario, working through the stages of bargaining focusing on development of strategy, negotiating approaches and skills, and problem solving.

Prior to the course, background information will be provided for the day long bargaining scenario - common information regarding the business, employees, and union involvement.

Attendees will be split into groups, each bargaining team will be either union or employer - depending on size may be a MECA (multi-employer collective agreement). They will have the opportunity to develop a high-level bargaining strategy and prepare for bargaining with assistance from the facilitators. Then in the practice negotiation scenario, they will work through claim development, claim exchange, and problems will arise that need to be overcome.

After the scenario, there will be a group debrief and opportunity for feedback and improvement.

About the Presenters

Paul Diver is a highly experienced negotiator, leadership and business team facilitator, organisation development and change consultant and employment relations advocate/adviser.

Paul established Three60 Consult (formerly Paul Diver Associates) Employment Relations consulting business in 1991.

Paul has represented and advocated for employers across a wide range of business and organisation sectors since 1979 and has been consistently successful in creating high level results for those clients. Paul and the team currently negotiate or advise on the negotiation of a large number of Collective Agreements across a wide range of industries.

Paul has an LLB and is an Associate of the Arbitrators' and Mediators Institute of New Zealand, and a member of the Employment Law Institute of New Zealand.

Anna Jones has been part of Three60 Consult since 2015 and has extensive experience in employment relations and dispute resolution, having led over 2000 mediations to resolution involving a broad range of issues. As a professional mediator, Anna has worked in a number of different jurisdictions including employment, commercial, human rights, sports, weathertight and tenancy.

Anna has specialized in the more complex conflicts that can arise within employment which are often difficult to define but have a significantly detrimental effect in the workplace such as bullying.

Anna also has significant experience assisting parties in collective bargaining and has been involved both as an advocate for employers in retail, healthcare, aged care, apparel and transport and logistics. In her capacity as a mediator, Anna has also been involved in some of New Zealand's most high profile industrial relations disputes in recent history.

Travelling from out of town?

In response to member demand we are introducing a Travel Discount, available for those members in provincial centres who have to travel to attend one of our professional development courses.

As a rule, if you have to travel far enough to book a flight/hotel room to be able to attend the course, HRINZ will offer you a course discount to assist with these costs: $500 for 2 day courses. To enquire about this discount or if you're unsure about eligibility please contact us.

This has been introduced as an initiative which will hopefully enable our members in regional areas to attend our excellent workshops!
