Participants will work through multiple phases of the design process, from exploration research with real people; to idea generation; and onto experimentation, prototyping and testing of concepts. As an extension to the course, participants will also have 1 hour of design coaching with an experienced member of the ThinkPlace team.

Day 1 and Day 2 of the course are separated by a week to allow for participants to complete research in their organisations.

Day 1: Introduction and problem exploration

  • Introduce and provide an overview of human centred design, including the process and principles behind it, and the characteristics of how we'll work
  • Explore and define the problem we want to solve
  • Set our intent and define understanding how we'll know if we've been successful.
  • Plan to conduct short empathy interviews and discover more about the problem from other people's perspectives.

Homework: Exploration and discovery

Conduct a small number of short empathy-style interviews with colleagues in the workplace. The information gathered will help to inform Day 2, allowing participants to draw insights and generate ideas.

Day 2: Synthesis, idea generation, and prototyping

  • Unpack and synthesise their findings from the exploratory interviews
  • Follow a structured idea generation and concept development process to enrich and refine ideas.
  • Choose a concept to prototype at a low level of fidelity, in a way that can be taken back into the participant's organisation and then tested and refined with others.

Follow up: 1 hour of 1 on 1 coaching

Participants will have access to 1 hour of 1 on 1 design coaching with Thinkplace, focusing on outcomes or developments from designs the participant has generated from the course.

About the Presenter

Ben believes in pushing boundaries, challenging assumptions, and staying curious to constantly see the world with fresh eyes. For Ben, every person is worth believing in, fighting for and designing for. Ben's expertise lies in distilling complex issues into clear, compelling and engaging products. He is passionate about bringing the customer's voice into the design of services to create a human centred world.

Ben's work is multi-faceted, from exploring begging as a phenomenon in Wellington City; creating new services to incentivise business investment in health and safety; mapping ways to develop and grow person-centred mental wellbeing services in Auckland; to creating a human-centred understanding of transport systems in cities across New Zealand.

About Thinkplace

We are a strategic and human-centred design consultancy, working with leaders to create new and better futures - vibrant communities, strong economies, sustainable environments and trusted institutions. We believe in a positive future world that balances the needs of the collective and those of the individual.

We engage with the complexity and the messiness of real human experiences - how people live, work and play; how people experience products, services, regulations; how they navigate systems they interact with - health, education, energy, economic, regulatory, social welfare, to name a few.

We ground responses in real human behaviour and broad system understanding. We move from insight to impact, empowering people to create change that matters. We know design is only as good as the experiences that are generated.

Travelling from out of town?

In response to member demand we are introducing a Travel Discount, available for those members in provincial centres who have to travel to attend one of our professional development courses.

As a rule, if you have to travel far enough to book a flight/hotel room to be able to attend the course, HRINZ will offer you a course discount to assist with these costs: $500 for 2 day courses. To enquire about this discount or if you're unsure about eligibility please contact us.

This has been introduced as an initiative which will hopefully enable our members in regional areas to attend our excellent workshops!
