Dr Kathie Irwin started her career in education in 1974 training as a primary school teacher at Palmerston North College of Education. She has served over twenty years as an academic in New Zealand universities (Massey and Victoria). Kathie specializes in Maori development and education. Whilst at Victoria she held the positions of inaugural Kaihautu (Director) of He Parekereke: The Institute for Research and Development in Maori Education and Head of Department. In 1987-1988 Kathie was a member of the team which undertook the Government Review of Te Kohanga Review.

In December, 2002, some 29 years after enrolling in her first university paper, she graduated Doctor of Philosophy from Victoria University. Her Doctoral Dissertation is entitled Maori Education: From Wretchedness to Hope. Kathie is self employed and works for her own company Educational Horizons Limited. She is currently working on contract to the Te Kohanga Reo National Trust as Manager, Crown Relations and Negotiations.

Descended from Ngati Porou, Ngati Kahungunu, Scots, Orkney Island and Irish forebears, Kathie is the mother of two teenage children. Her favorite pastimes are singing, swimming and being in natural spaces like the bush and the seaside.
