A4 Developing Values

Frances Tweedy

Vision+Values+Leadership=Performance

Frances Tweedy FHRINZ and Cheryl Wright, Capability Group Limited

The theories say this formula works but what happens in practice? Using case studies from different New Zealand and Australian organisations this session will look at the key learning that has come from assisting those organisations to build values–driven cultures. The case studies will explore different processes for selecting and embedding core values; developing values–based leadership; building an infrastructure that supports the vision and values including learning and development, coaching and Human Resource policies and processes. The critical role of HR in championing the change process will be defined. Participants will apply these concepts and the learning to a further case study and to their own organisation if applicable.

The theories say this formula works but what happens in practice? Using case studies from different New Zealand and Australian organisations this session will look at the key learning that has come from assisting those organisations to build values–driven cultures. The case studies will explore:

  • different processes for selecting and embedding core values
  • developing values–based leadership
  • building an infrastructure that supports the vision and values including
    – learning and development
    – coaching
    – Human Resource policies and processes
  • the critical role of HR in championing the change process

This session will provide participants with an overview of a number of real–life examples of organisations where a values based culture has been developed and examples of resulting performance improvement.

In each case study, what worked – and what didn't work – will be explored so that the potential hazards are identified.

Small groups will then apply those concepts to a further case study, identifying the processes or approaches they would take based on their learning. They will also be able to consider the learning as it applies to their own organisations. A summary of what actually happened in the case study organisation will be shared followed by time for questions and answers.

Participants will leave with

  • an increased understanding of organisation change in action in New Zealand and Australia
  • knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
  • an understanding of the different roles that HR can play in developing a new culture in their own organisation.

Frances Tweedy, a Fellow of HRINZ, and Cheryl Wright have been working in the area of culture shaping and organisational development for twenty years under the name of Human Resource Associates (NZ).

Now, as Capability Group Limited, they continue to work in the private, public and not–for–profit sectors assisting organisations to effect sustainable change. Both have a background at executive level in human resource management and integrate strategic HR processes in their consulting.

Frances and Cheryl are experienced facilitators who enable people to learn through discovery, exploration and application.
