Brendan Ryan

B2 HR Person of the Year

Brendan Ryan, Counties Manukau Police

HRINZ 2004 HR Person of the Year is HR Manager for Counties Manukau Police District, New Zealand’s busiest police district. When Brendan commenced there in August 2003 he found an organisation under severe workload pressure, a relatively inexperienced front line police force and a district about to undergo a major organisational restructure.

But of major concern to Brendan were the HR risks that had been identified. These included retention of key staff, training and leave management. Overarching all of these was the issue of leadership.

In this session Brendan will discuss the issues he found, the particular context he found himself in and the steps he has taken to address these risks – risks in no way unique to Police.

Brendan Ryan's career has focused almost exclusively around some aspect of human resources notwithstanding that his Degree from Victoria University was pretty much devoid of any real link to the career he ended up taking. Mind you that was because HR and associated matters did not feature on timetables back then.

From a personnel officer in an engineering manufacturing company, to 13 years in the Wellington Employers Association, 5 years with Ernst and Young, 10 years in the public health sector and now with the Police, Brendan has had exposure to a very wide range of industries and sectors. This has culminated in some ways in his award which he sees as coming about through the combined learning and experience he has obtained from his years in human resource activity.
