The Diversity Game – Playing for Business Success

Philippa Reed, EEO Trust

The Diversity Game is a participative and entertaining tool which really engages people in thinking about diversity and how it affects their employment decisions.

Originally developed in the US in the 1990's, it won an award as one of the top ten training tools and has been used in South Africa and Australia for several years. A number of international corporations including IBM, Shell, Coca Cola Amatil and LendLease already use The Diversity Game as a fun and interactive tool, designed to challenge assumptions and facilitate cultural change within the organisation.

The Diversity Game has been specifically customised for New Zealand – with assistance from the EEO Trust, Simpson Grierson and the Human Rights Commission. This tool allows teams to "play" in a way that educates, informs, and encourages discussion. It can be used in a variety of contexts – including induction, leadership development and strategic planning.

The session would consist of a short introduction to the Diversity Game, then participants would be grouped into 4–5 teams(overall numbers limited to 30 per workshop) to play a brief version of the game. Post–play discussion and evaluation to form part of the workshop.

The Diversity Game was launched in New Zealand in May 2005.

Dr Philippa Reed is the EEO Trust's Chief Executive. Philippa has worked closely with members of the EEO Employers Group on diversity and work–life initiatives and promoted the role of the EEO Trust in workplaces. Prior to joining the EEO Trust in 2003, Philippa was Executive Director with Executive Programmes at the University of Auckland Business School, having previously worked in senior roles at KPMG for a number of years. Philippa's qualifications include a doctorate in Germanic Languages and Literature, a graduate qualification in change management and an MFA.
