Workplaces are increasingly internationalised and many organisations hire international talent to meet the needs of their business. These international employees have to work well together with the domestic employees, and, to retain international talent, it is also important that they build a new social network outside of the workplace. International employees who have a strong local network of friends are less likely to leave the country.

In this webinar, Marian van Bakel will talk about her research on creating intercultural connections in and outside of the workplace, which is recently summarized in a practitioner-oriented book, Breaking out of the Expat Bubble. She will emphasize how important connections between international and domestic employees are for performance, knowledge sharing, culture learning, social support and adjustment. She will also outline what organisations can do to encourage such intercultural connections in the workplace, for example by setting up intercultural mentoring, or by connecting international employees with a local.

Marian will present on her research before the room opens up for Q&A. The Q&A will be facilitated by Dr Deepika Jindal (The University of Auckland).
